Loss of teeth or untreated gum disease can result in the loss of bone in the upper or lower jaw. Lost teeth can cause the bone in that area to break down and be absorbed by the body. Inflamed or infected gums can also cause the jawbone to break down.
Bone loss can become so severe that teeth may become loose and eventually be lost. It also makes it impossible to place dental implants or provide a patient with dentures. A bone graft can restore the bone’s optimal thickness.
When a bone graft is performed, the gum is opened, and tiny chips of real or synthetic bone are placed in the area of loss. The body grows new, thicker bones around these chips, which contributes to better oral health.
